Buying an AR-15 online is legal, straightforward, and how a growing number of first-time buyers are doing it.
The process has a few steps that aren’t obvious if you’ve never done it before — but once someone walks you through them, the whole thing makes sense. Here’s exactly how it works.
Step 1: Choose Your Rifle
Start with a quality AR-15 from a reputable manufacturer in a standard 16-inch 5.56 NATO configuration. This is the right starting point for the vast majority of first-time buyers.
If you’d rather skip the research entirely, a complete package gives you a pre-selected, function-checked rifle with everything you need included — optic, case, safety gear, and all. That’s what Ready Rifle offers.
Step 2: Purchase From a Licensed Online Retailer
Buy from a licensed FFL dealer operating online. All legitimate online firearm retailers are federally licensed and required to follow federal and state law on every sale.
When you check out, you’ll enter your shipping address — but your firearm won’t ship to your home. It ships to an FFL dealer near you. More on that in a moment.
Step 3: Select Your FFL Dealer
An FFL — Federal Firearms Licensee — is a licensed gun shop near you that legally receives your firearm on your behalf. Federal law requires all firearm transfers to go through one.
Most online retailers either provide a map to choose your FFL during checkout or handle the selection for you. At Ready Rifle, we do all of it — we find the closest qualified dealer to you, call them directly, confirm they accept transfers, verify their transfer fee, and coordinate the entire process before your order ships.
Step 4: Your Firearm Ships to the FFL Dealer
Once your order is placed and your FFL is confirmed, your firearm ships directly to that dealer. Shipping typically takes a few business days depending on your location and the retailer.
Your retailer should notify you when the firearm has shipped and provide tracking information so you know when it arrives.
Step 5: The Dealer Contacts You
When your firearm arrives at the FFL dealer, they’ll reach out to let you know it’s ready for pickup. At Ready Rifle we also email you at this point with the dealer’s address, hours, what to bring, and exactly what to expect when you walk in.
Step 6: Go to the Dealer for Pickup
Bring your valid government-issued photo ID with your current address on it. If your state has additional requirements — like an FOID card in Illinois or a Firearm Safety Certificate in California — bring those as well.
At the dealer you’ll fill out ATF Form 4473 — a standard federal form with your personal information and eligibility questions. The dealer submits it to the FBI for a background check. Most approvals come back within minutes.
Once approved, you pay the dealer’s transfer fee and take your rifle home.
Step 7: Take Ownership Responsibly
Your rifle is yours. A few things to do immediately:
Store it properly — in a hard case or secure safe, especially if children are in the home. Get familiar with the four rules of firearm safety. Start dry-fire practice at home before your first range trip. And if you have questions, reach out to your retailer — a good one stays in touch after the sale.
At Ready Rifle, you’ll receive a Day 1 email with safe storage basics, a Day 7 check-in, and a Day 30 follow-up. We don’t disappear after you pick up your rifle.
The Short Version
Choose your rifle. Buy from a licensed retailer. Select an FFL dealer near you. Your rifle ships to the dealer. You go in with your ID, pass a background check, pay the transfer fee, and take it home.
That’s the whole process. It’s simpler than it sounds and faster than most people expect.
